Payments review

Tidewater Pay review

A merchant payments provider with transparent pricing, fast settlement and good tools for small businesses, at a rate that larger merchants can beat elsewhere.

4.0/ 5Tested

What we liked

  • Single blended rate with no monthly fee, published in full
  • Next-day settlement as standard, with an optional paid instant payout
  • Card reader, online checkout and invoicing share one dashboard
  • Chargeback process is clear and disputes can be managed in the app

What we did not

  • Blended rate is higher than interchange-plus pricing for merchants above modest volume
  • Support is chat-first; telephone support requires a paid plan

Tidewater Pay is a fictional payments provider reviewed here to demonstrate our rating method. Nothing below describes a real firm.

Fees

Tidewater charges one blended rate per transaction, slightly higher for online than in-person, with a small fixed component and no monthly, setup or minimum fees. The full schedule is published, including the fees for refunds, chargebacks and currency conversion, which is not universal in this market.

The blended model is easy to understand and good value for small merchants. For those processing more than a modest monthly volume, an interchange-plus provider, which passes through the actual network cost plus a fixed margin, will usually be cheaper, particularly for merchants whose customers mostly use debit cards. Tidewater does not offer interchange-plus pricing.

The optional instant-payout feature costs 1 per cent of the amount settled. Used occasionally, it is a reasonable convenience; used daily, it is expensive.

Platform

The offering combines a card reader, an online checkout that integrates with the common e-commerce platforms, invoicing and a dashboard that ties them together. Setting up took under an hour in our test, including verification. Reporting is clear, exports are clean and the reconciliation view matches payouts to transactions in a way that accountants will appreciate.

Chargebacks are handled in the dashboard, with evidence uploaded directly and status tracked. That is better than the email-based process at several larger competitors.

Safety

Tidewater is authorised as a payment institution and safeguards merchant funds in segregated accounts as required. Card data is handled under the industry security standard, and the firm's reader and checkout are certified. It publishes a status page with incident history, which shows two brief outages in the past year.

Verdict

For a small merchant who wants one provider for in-person and online payments, with pricing they can understand, Tidewater is a strong option. Growing merchants should model the cost against an interchange-plus alternative once volume rises. The rating reflects high platform and safety scores and a fee score that depends on scale.
